Prohibitory Orders Issued in Sambhal Following Violence Over Mosque Survey

Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh is on high alert after violence erupted over a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid, leading to the imposition of prohibitory orders. The unrest, which claimed three lives and injured dozens, occurred as protesters clashed with security personnel, objecting to the survey’s resumption on Sunday. Security forces were attacked with stones and gunfire, prompting the use of tear gas and batons. Twenty-one individuals have been detained, and investigations are ongoing.

Authorities confirmed the deaths of three young men, aged around 25, with two attributed to gunshot wounds. Internet services were suspended for 24 hours, and schools were closed on Monday to prevent further escalation. District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya stated that outsiders and public representatives are barred from entering the district without prior permission under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Violators face strict legal action under Section 223.

The mosque survey stems from a petition claiming the site originally housed a Harihar temple demolished during Mughal rule. The Supreme Court lawyer representing the Hindu side has called for the Archaeological Survey of India to take control of the site. Tensions have been mounting since the survey began on November 19, with Sunday’s clash marking the most violent episode yet. Security personnel remain deployed to maintain peace as the situation stabilizes.
