Lebanon: Nearly 500 Killed in Israel’s Biggest Airstrike on Hezbollah Since Gaza War

Israel has launched its biggest aerial offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and over 1,650 injuries, including around 100 women and children. This escalation follows a series of events, including the killing of top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in July and the launch of rockets and drones by Hezbollah in retaliation. The situation has been exacerbated by serial explosions across Lebanon, which Lebanon blames on Israel’s Mossad.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of “complicated days” ahead, stating that Israel’s policy is to stay ahead of threats. He emphasized that the campaign is not against the Lebanese people but aimed at degrading Hezbollah’s military capabilities. Netanyahu urged Lebanese citizens to “get out of harm’s way now” as Hezbollah uses them as human shields.

The international community has expressed concern, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres saying he is “gravely alarmed” and EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell warning of an “all-out war.” The United States is working to calm the situation, with President Biden discussing “concrete ideas” with allies to prevent further escalation.
