Hyderabad Voter Roll Verification Finds No Illegal Immigrants, Officials Confirm

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Hyderabad has not identified a single illegal immigrant registered as a voter across the city’s 15 Assembly constituencies, according to election authorities. District Election Officer and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan stated that the verification exercise did not uncover any illegal foreign nationals on the electoral rolls. However, officials found a small number of Nepali citizens whose names had been included despite not being eligible to vote in India. Their names have since been removed from the voter lists as part of the revision process to ensure the accuracy of electoral records.

Explaining the action, Karnan said the Nepali nationals had entered India legally and therefore could not be classified as illegal immigrants. Nevertheless, since they are not Indian citizens and retain their voting rights in Nepal, they are not legally entitled to be enrolled as voters in India. Election officials clarified that the deletions were carried out strictly in accordance with electoral laws, emphasizing that only Indian citizens are eligible to be included in the country’s voter rolls. The verification exercise was aimed at identifying and removing ineligible entries while maintaining the integrity of the electoral database.

The findings come amid heightened public and political attention surrounding the revision of electoral rolls in Telangana. The confirmation that no illegal immigrants were found in Hyderabad’s voter lists is expected to play a significant role in ongoing discussions regarding voter verification and electoral transparency. Authorities have reiterated that the revision process will continue to focus on ensuring that only eligible citizens remain on the electoral rolls while correcting any irregularities identified during the verification exercise.
