Prakash Rajpurohit, a 2010-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the new Deputy Election Commissioner (DEC) in the Election Commission of India (ECI). He fills the vacancy created after the premature repatriation of Sanjay Kumar, who had been overseeing the Electoral Rolls and Information Technology (IT) divisions. According to the appointment order, Rajpurohit will serve in the post until April 8, 2030. His appointment comes at a significant time, as the Commission prepares for important Assembly elections scheduled early next year.
The appointment has drawn attention because of ongoing discussions within the Election Commission regarding the handling of its IT division and administrative work. Earlier, Election Commissioners S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had reportedly raised concerns over the routing of files related to the IT department, arguing that established administrative procedures were not being followed. The issue gained prominence after changes in the internal reporting structure following the departure of former Deputy Election Commissioner Sanjay Kumar.
With Prakash Rajpurohit now joining the Election Commission, attention will be on how responsibilities are redistributed, particularly the Electoral Rolls and IT divisions that were previously handled by Sanjay Kumar. Officials are expected to decide the new allocation of work in the coming days, with observers watching whether the latest appointment helps resolve the administrative concerns raised within the Commission while ensuring smooth functioning ahead of upcoming elections.
