Punjabi Influencer Manjit Kaur Succumbs Weeks After Alleged Kidnapping and Brutal Attack

Punjabi social media influencer Manjit Kaur has died nearly two months after she was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and set on fire in Punjab. The 28-year-old passed away on August 26 while undergoing treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, police confirmed. According to the complaint filed by her mother, Kaur was allegedly lured to a location near a liquor shop in Chandigarh’s Sector 34 on July 3 by two acquaintances before being abducted and taken to Morinda in Punjab, where the brutal attack reportedly took place.

The complaint alleges that the accused assaulted Kaur, tied her to a tree, and set her on fire before fleeing the scene. A friend of the victim reportedly reached the location in time to extinguish the flames with a blanket and rushed her to a hospital in Morinda. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Mohali and eventually admitted to PGIMER in Chandigarh for advanced treatment. Her mother further claimed that after Kaur regained consciousness on August 5, she informed the police to record her daughter’s statement, but alleged that officers failed to arrive. Police, however, have denied the allegation, stating that they provided full cooperation throughout the investigation.

Following Kaur’s death, police registered a case under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 140(1) (kidnapping), along with other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Chandigarh Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurjeet Kaur said investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence while making efforts to trace the suspects and determine the motive behind the crime, which remains unclear. Manjit Kaur had built a significant online following of around 1.46 lakh Instagram followers, where she was known for sharing videos featuring Punjabi and Haryanvi music.
