The Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, amid continuous protests by Opposition members over the alleged police crackdown on students during the July 20 Parliament march. The Bill was cleared through a voice vote without any debate after the House reassembled at noon under the chairmanship of BJP MP Dilip Saikia. Opposition MPs continued raising slogans, with several members entering the Well of the House and demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed disappointment over the Opposition’s refusal to participate in the discussion on the Bill. He said the government had intended to hold a detailed debate on the legislation but alleged that the Opposition disrupted the proceedings instead. Rijiju remarked that Parliament is meant for discussion and that elected representatives are accountable to the people who sent them to the House. Presiding officer Dilip Saikia also described it as unfortunate that such an important Bill had to be passed without meaningful debate.

During the day’s proceedings, the Lok Sabha also approved an extension for the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025. BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, who chairs the committee, was granted additional time to submit its report until the first day of the last week of the upcoming Winter Session. Meanwhile, the Monsoon Session of Parliament continued amid repeated disruptions and protests by Opposition parties over various political issues.
