TGHRC seeks report after 40 students fall ill in Nagarkurnool Gurukul food poisoning case

The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the food poisoning incident at the Mannanur Primitive Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) Gurukul Hostel in Nagarkurnool district, where around 40 students reportedly fell ill after consuming breakfast on July 9. According to officials, the students allegedly ate khichdi found to be infested with maggots, following which several of them complained of vomiting, stomach pain and other symptoms. All the affected children were shifted to the Achampet Government Hospital for treatment.

Acting on media reports, the commission directed the Nagarkurnool District Collector to submit a detailed report explaining the circumstances that led to the incident. The report has been sought on the current health condition of the students, the findings of the official inquiry, the results of food and water sample analysis, action taken against those found responsible and the measures being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The matter has been posted for review on July 11.

A student who did not consume the breakfast said he was warned by classmates after they noticed maggots in the khichdi. Meanwhile, Achampet MLA Dr. Vamshi Krishna assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that strict action would be taken against any official found negligent, including the principal, caretaker or any other staff member. Authorities have stated that the safety and well-being of students remain the top priority while the investigation continues.
