NIMS Gets New Leadership as Dr Rahul Devraj Takes Charge as Director

Hyderabad: The Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has appointed Dr Rahul Devraj as its new Director, marking a significant development for one of Telangana’s premier healthcare institutions. A renowned urologist and academician, Dr Devraj succeeds senior surgical gastroenterologist Dr Bheerappa Nagari. Prior to his appointment, he served as Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at NIMS and played a key role in strengthening the institute’s renal care and transplant services.

Under Dr Rahul Devraj’s leadership, NIMS achieved a major milestone by successfully conducting more than 2,000 kidney transplants, establishing itself as one of India’s leading renal transplant centres. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing patient care, surgical innovation, and transplant outcomes. The institute has gained recognition for offering advanced treatment facilities while serving patients from Telangana and across the country.

One of the most notable achievements during his tenure was the successful completion of South India’s first robotic renal transplant in a government hospital. The groundbreaking surgery was performed on a 33-year-old patient suffering from end-stage kidney disease following the rejection of an earlier transplant. The operation was successful, with the transplanted kidney functioning immediately after surgery, highlighting NIMS’ growing reputation for excellence in advanced medical procedures. With Dr Devraj now at the helm, expectations are high for further expansion of specialized healthcare services and medical innovation at the institute.
