UK Lawmaker Files Lawsuit Against xAI Over Alleged Deepfake Images

British Labour Party lawmaker Jess Asato has launched legal action against Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI, alleging that its Grok chatbot was used to create fake bikini images of her without consent. The lawsuit, filed in London’s High Court, claims misuse of private information under the UK’s Data Protection Act. Asato said the images were generated in January shortly after she publicly criticized the growing spread of deepfake pornography and online image manipulation technologies.

According to Asato, the incident represents a serious violation of privacy and highlights the risks posed by AI tools that can generate realistic images of real people. She argued that creating and distributing such content without permission can cause significant emotional and reputational harm. Comparing the experience to being “digitally stripped” without consent, she said technology companies must be held accountable when their platforms enable the creation of harmful content. Her legal challenge seeks financial damages and aims to establish a legal precedent regarding the responsibility of AI developers.

The case comes amid increasing global concerns over deepfake technology and the misuse of artificial intelligence. Following widespread criticism earlier this year, xAI announced restrictions preventing users from editing images of real people to remove clothing. The United Kingdom has already passed legislation making it illegal to create or request non-consensual deepfake images of adults. However, Asato argues that legal reforms alone are not enough and that companies should also face consequences for harm caused before such safeguards were introduced. The lawsuit is expected to draw significant attention as governments and regulators worldwide debate how to control rapidly advancing AI technologies.
