Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Tamil Nadu Government as Congress Extends Support Amid Major Political Shifts Across States

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief met Tamil Nadu Governor in Chennai to stake claim to form the next government after emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections. The Congress party officially announced support for TVK, stating that the alliance would be based on secular values and mutual respect. Congress leaders said their support would continue only if no communal forces were included in the alliance. Preparations for Vijay’s possible swearing-in ceremony have already begun in Chennai, with political activity intensifying at TVK headquarters and government offices.

Meanwhile, political tensions sharply escalated in West Bengal following the BJP’s historic victory that ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress. The Election Commission ordered immediate arrests in connection with post-poll violence after two people were killed and multiple party offices were attacked. TMC leaders accused BJP workers of targeting opposition offices, while viral videos from Kolkata showed bulldozers demolishing structures near the iconic New Market area. BJP state president announced that the new BJP government in the state will take oath on May 9 at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.

In Assam, Chief Minister resigned along with his cabinet colleagues, paving the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government after the NDA’s victory in the Assembly elections. At the same time, Kerala’s political landscape also witnessed major developments, with the Congress-led UDF celebrating a massive electoral victory while Left parties began internal reviews after their defeat. Several senior leaders across states reacted strongly to the election outcomes, making the 2026 Assembly elections one of the most politically significant shifts in recent years.
