A massive explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu has killed at least 18 people and injured several others. The blast occurred at a licensed facility in Kattanarpatti village while workers were engaged in routine production activities. The intensity of the explosion was so high that multiple sections of the factory were completely destroyed, and the sound was reportedly heard several kilometres away.
Initial reports suggest the explosion was caused by friction during the handling of explosive materials, which triggered a sudden fire and chain reaction. At the time of the incident, over 30 workers were inside the factory, making the situation even more tragic. Fire and rescue teams from nearby areas rushed to the spot and battled the flames for over an hour before bringing the situation under control.
Rescue operations were difficult as several victims were trapped under debris. Authorities recovered bodies from the rubble, and the death toll increased as the search continued. The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, and their condition is being monitored. Police have started an investigation to check whether safety rules were properly followed, as the incident once again raises serious questions about safety standards in firecracker factories in the region.
