The has announced a major restructuring of policing in Hyderabad, creating two new police commissionerates — Future City and Malkajgiri — by splitting the existing Rachakonda commissionerate. With this move, Hyderabad will now have four police commissionerates: Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Future City and Malkajgiri. The decision aligns with the state’s aggressive urban expansion and administrative overhaul following the large-scale expansion of the (GHMC). The government said the reorganisation aims to improve law and order management, public service delivery and crime control in a rapidly growing metropolitan region.
Under the revised police limits, high-security and administrative zones such as the Assembly, Secretariat, Begumpet, Shamshabad Airport and Budvel High Court have been placed under the Hyderabad Commissionerate. The Cyberabad Commissionerate will continue to handle major IT and industrial hubs including Gachibowli, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Madhapur, Raidurg, Patancheru, Genome Valley, RC Puram and Ameenpur, along with suburban areas like Keesara, Shamirpet, Quthbullapur and Kompally. Bhongir has been carved out as a separate police unit, with a dedicated Superintendent of Police appointed for the Yadadri Bhongir district, reflecting the government’s focus on decentralised policing.
The restructuring comes in the backdrop of the GHMC’s expansion from 625 sq km to over 2,000 sq km after the merger of 27 municipal bodies within the Outer Ring Road, forming what the government calls the Core Urban Region (CURE). The expanded GHMC is now divided into 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards, necessitating a parallel revamp of policing infrastructure. As part of the changes, Sudheer Babu has been appointed as the Future City Police Commissioner, while former Cyberabad Commissioner Avinash Mohanty has been shifted to head the Malkajgiri Commissionerate, with IGP M Ramesh taking charge of Cyberabad. The -led government has positioned this reorganisation as a long-term governance reform tied to Hyderabad’s transformation into a larger, more complex urban and economic hub.
