Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday arrested YouTuber Felix Gerald, the operator of the RedPix channel, on charges of circulating fake news related to the Karur stampede incident. The tragedy, which took place during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, claimed the lives of 41 people and left several others injured. Authorities stated that Gerald allegedly uploaded misleading videos and content linking the mishap to unverified claims, prompting swift action from the Cyber Crime Police. His arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of online platforms and their role in spreading misinformation during sensitive events.
According to police officials, the arrest was made after a preliminary inquiry established that Gerald’s channel had broadcast content without factual basis, aggravating public distress following the stampede. The Cyber Crime unit emphasized that such false narratives can hinder rescue efforts, create panic, and obstruct the work of authorities in managing large-scale emergencies.
