Hyderabad GHMC Worker Killed in Accident During Ganesh Procession

Hyderabad: A tragic accident claimed the life of a Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sanitation worker during Ganesh procession duties on Sunday morning. The victim, identified as Renuka, had been serving the corporation for the past fifteen years and was on duty when the unfortunate incident occurred near Basheerbagh–Liberty. While crossing the road during her shift, she was struck by a Tusker vehicle, resulting in severe head injuries.

Eyewitnesses, including fellow GHMC staff, immediately rushed Renuka to a nearby private hospital in hopes of saving her life. However, doctors declared her dead upon arrival due to the critical nature of her injuries. The accident not only shocked her colleagues but also drew attention to the risks faced daily by frontline sanitation workers who operate in busy public spaces, particularly during large-scale religious and cultural processions in the city.

Local police have taken swift action by detaining the driver, identified as Gajanand, and registering a case against him. Authorities have moved Renuka’s body to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem examination. The tragic loss has raised concerns about worker safety during mass gatherings and highlighted the need for stricter safety measures, especially when heavy vehicles are deployed amid crowded city events.
