A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday afternoon, causing tremors across parts of the island chain. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 12:06 pm with its epicentre located in the Andaman Sea at a depth of 90 kilometres. The coordinates were recorded at latitude 12.49°N and longitude 93.83°E. Though the tremors were felt strongly in several coastal areas, there have been no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of life.

Officials from the local disaster management department confirmed that the quake was of moderate intensity and that emergency teams were on standby to respond to any aftershocks or structural hazards. Residents in Port Blair and nearby regions reportedly rushed out of their homes and offices as the tremors lasted several seconds. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, lying along a major tectonic boundary where the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates meet, frequently experience moderate to strong seismic activity, making them one of India’s most earthquake-prone regions.

Seismologists explained that quakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the region but warned residents to stay alert, especially near coastal areas where undersea disturbances can occasionally trigger minor tidal fluctuations. The NCS continues to monitor seismic patterns in the Andaman Sea, and local authorities have urged citizens to remain calm but cautious. While no tsunami warning has been issued, disaster management units are maintaining close coordination with the Indian Meteorological Department to track any further seismic activity in the region.
