The United States Senate has narrowly confirmed Todd Blanche as the country’s Attorney General, giving President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney permanent leadership of the Justice Department. Blanche secured confirmation in a 50-49 vote after serving in the role on an acting basis following the dismissal of former Attorney General Pam Bondi in April. His appointment comes as the Trump administration continues to pursue an agenda focused on expanding investigations into individuals and groups the president has frequently criticised. The close vote reflected deep political divisions, with two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—joining Democrats in opposing the nomination.
Blanche’s confirmation followed an intense and closely watched confirmation process marked by concerns over his close ties to President Trump and questions about the Justice Department’s independence. A major point of controversy was a proposed $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” intended to compensate individuals who claimed they had been unfairly targeted by the criminal justice system, along with provisions that would have protected Trump and his family from IRS tax audits. Facing resistance from several Republican senators, Blanche formally agreed in writing to abandon the compensation fund and withdraw the tax audit protections, a move that helped secure enough support to advance his nomination through the Senate.
Despite those concessions, Democratic lawmakers continued to oppose Blanche’s appointment, arguing that his long-standing relationship with President Trump could undermine the Justice Department’s impartiality. Senator Dick Durbin warned that the country required an Attorney General committed to independence and accountability, while Senator Lisa Murkowski stated that the nation needed a Justice Department leader capable of checking executive power when necessary. Supporters, however, argued that Blanche’s experience as Trump’s former defence attorney uniquely positioned him to manage the department effectively under the current administration. With his confirmation now complete, Blanche is expected to play a central role in implementing the administration’s legal and law enforcement priorities.
