The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the depth of the second quake at 66 km, located near Bishnupur. Despite the intensity, no immediate reports of damage or casualties were available. The tremors were felt in multiple parts of the state, including offices near Imphal airport, where employees reported mild shaking. Officials are monitoring the situation closely, as northeastern India is a seismically active region.
Earlier in the day, Myanmar also experienced two mild earthquakes, with magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.5, at 3:36 AM and 3:54 AM respectively. These quakes occurred near Myanmar’s border with Manipur, raising concerns about increased seismic activity in the region. Manipur’s Kamjong district shares a border with Myanmar, making it particularly vulnerable to tremors originating from across the boundary. While no structural damage has been reported, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, especially given the region’s history of earthquakes. The IMD and disaster management teams are assessing the situation, ensuring that emergency response mechanisms are in place in case of aftershocks.
Manipur, along with other northeastern states, falls in India’s Seismic Zone V, indicating a high risk of earthquakes.
