Trump Proposes Relocation of Gaza Residents Amidst Growing Humanitarian Crisis

United States President Donald Trump has suggested relocating Gaza’s population to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan, citing the need to “clean out” the war-torn enclave. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where relentless bombing has left much of the territory in ruins and displaced millions. He discussed the matter with King Abdullah II of Jordan and plans to engage with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, proposing temporary or long-term relocation for up to 1.5 million people.

Trump’s comments were met with fierce condemnation. Palestinian Islamic Jihad labeled the idea as “deplorable,” accusing Trump of encouraging war crimes. Arab leaders have historically opposed such mass displacements, with Egypt previously warning that forced migration could undermine its peace treaty with Israel. Palestinians fear any relocation would evoke memories of the Nakba, the mass displacement during Israel’s creation in 1948.

Meanwhile, Trump lifted a hold on the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, citing their purchase as justification. The Israeli government, which has conducted a 15-month offensive on Gaza that killed over 47,000 people, welcomed Trump’s proposal. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich supported the relocation plan, calling it a step toward lasting peace. However, critics argue the plan perpetuates a cycle of displacement and ignores Palestinians’ right to remain on their land.
