Trump Cites India’s Election Model, Pawan Khera Tells Him to “Take CEC and EVMs to America”

Congress leader Pawan Khera took a sarcastic swipe at US President Donald Trump after Trump praised India’s voter identification system while urging the US Congress to pass the SAVE America Act. In a post on X, Khera jokingly asked Trump to take Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta to America and even offered to send India’s Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), saying it would be a small gesture in return for what he described as repeated insults and bullying towards India.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, highlighted India’s election process, stating that more than 646 million people voted in the country’s last general election, with less than one percent voting by mail and every voter required to present valid photo identification. Using India as an example, he renewed his demand for the passage of the SAVE America Act, which seeks stricter voter registration rules, proof of citizenship, mandatory voter identification, and tighter limits on mail-in voting in the United States.

The White House has defended the proposed legislation as a measure to protect the integrity of American elections, arguing that only US citizens should be allowed to vote in federal elections. The administration also compared the US system with countries such as India and Brazil, noting that both link voter identification to biometric databases. However, the bill remains politically divisive, with Democrats and Republicans split over its provisions, and the US Senate has yet to take further action after beginning its five-week recess.
