In a dramatic turn of events in Tripura, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) legislator Philip Reang has filed a police complaint accusing Pathik Dev Varma, son of Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, of issuing death threats to him and his family members. The alleged incident occurred on the night of September 1 inside the MLA Hostel at Khajur Bagan in West Tripura, raising serious concerns about security for elected representatives. According to the complaint, three men, including the Governor’s son, confronted the MLA near his quarters, obstructed him, and hurled abusive language before threatening to slit his throat. Reang further alleged that the group claimed they would mobilize 400 to 500 BJP workers to attack his family, forcing him to seek refuge in the quarters of fellow TMP legislator Biswajit Kalai.
The accusations have triggered political ripples in the state, particularly because the TMP is an ally of the ruling BJP. While Reang described the confrontation as part of a “deep-rooted conspiracy,” he emphasized that the threats left his family in a state of fear and insecurity. His written complaint to the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station detailed how the confrontation began during a private family discussion before escalating into direct threats of violence. Notably, he claimed that the accused individuals emerged from the quarters of BJP MLA Promode Reang, heightening suspicions of internal political maneuvering within the alliance. The alleged involvement of the Governor’s son has made the matter even more sensitive, as Jishnu Dev Varma is not only the Governor of Telangana but also a senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister of Tripura.
Responding to the controversy, Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee distanced the party from the allegations, stressing that the BJP neither promotes nor supports such acts. He said the state police and senior officials, including the DGP and West Tripura SP, had already intervened by visiting the MLA Hostel and speaking to the legislator. Bhattacharjee reiterated that “the law will take its own course” and assured that justice would be delivered, underlining the government’s policy of zero tolerance toward crime. Meanwhile, the FIR has placed law enforcement under pressure to act impartially, given the political sensitivities surrounding the Governor’s family. The unfolding case now stands as a test of both the state government’s credibility and its commitment to upholding law and order without political bias.
