A powerful thunderstorm swept through Delhi on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction, including the tragic deaths of a young man and a person with a disability. The storm, marked by intense rainfall and winds up to 60 kmph, struck around 7:50 p.m., causing trees and infrastructure to collapse across the city. A man riding a tricycle near Lodhi Road flyover was fatally struck by a falling electric pole, while 22-year-old Azhar from Maujpur lost his life in Gokulpuri when a tree crushed him and two parked motorcycles.
As the storm raged, at least 11 people sustained injuries in various parts of the capital. A particularly alarming incident occurred near Mukherjee Nagar, where the grill of an old foot overbridge gave way, injuring several pedestrians. The Delhi Fire Service quickly responded, and the injured were rushed to hospitals. Meanwhile, images and videos of uprooted trees falling onto moving and parked vehicles surfaced on social media, highlighting the extent of the damage.
The extreme weather disrupted air travel, with 13 flights diverted and many more delayed. Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) and airlines like IndiGo issued alerts warning travelers of ongoing delays. The Delhi Traffic Police also reported major roadblocks caused by fallen trees and severe waterlogging. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as more rain and high-speed winds are expected through Thursday, with investigations underway into infrastructure failures that led to the fatalities.
