Telangana Rainfall Deficit May Cross 20% as El Niño Triggers Dry Spell

Telangana is expected to witness a significant decline in rainfall from August 27 as the impact of El Niño begins to influence weather conditions across the state. After receiving moderate rainfall over the past few days due to a low-pressure system, most districts are now likely to experience dry weather or only isolated light showers. Weather experts predict that northern and eastern parts of Telangana may receive occasional light to moderate rain, while the rest of the state is expected to remain largely dry. The prolonged reduction in rainfall is also expected to push daytime temperatures higher, bringing hot and humid conditions over the next 10 days.

According to weather estimates, the dry spell could continue through the first week of September and may further widen Telangana’s monsoon rainfall deficit beyond 20 percent. Hyderabad is expected to be among the worst-affected cities, with its rainfall shortfall likely to exceed 25 percent during the same period. So far this monsoon season, Telangana has recorded 464.7 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 537.8 mm, reflecting a deficit of 14 percent. Hanumakonda has reported the largest shortfall at 45 percent, while districts including Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Jogulamba Gadwal and Khammam have also recorded rainfall deficits of more than 30 percent.

El Niño is a global climate phenomenon caused by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which alters atmospheric circulation and disrupts normal weather patterns. Its effects often reduce monsoon rainfall across parts of India while increasing temperatures and humidity. With only Kamareddy and Medak recording above-normal rainfall this season, meteorologists are closely monitoring the evolving weather pattern as concerns grow over its potential impact on agriculture, water resources and overall monsoon performance across Telangana.
