Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Seeking Review of Electoral Bonds Scheme Judgment

The Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking to review its judgment that struck down the Electoral Bonds scheme as unconstitutional. The review petition was filed by Advocate Mathews Nedumpara and another, challenging the Constitution Bench judgment delivered on February 15. The Court observed that there was no error apparent on the face of the record.

The Electoral Bonds scheme was introduced through 2018 amendments to various laws, allowing anonymous funding of political parties. The Supreme Court had held that the scheme infringed upon the voter’s fundamental right to know the source of funding for political parties. Following the judgment, the Court directed the State Bank of India to disclose details of bond purchasers and recipients.
