Ramdev Submits Undertaking in Court, Promises to Avoid Communal Remarks After ‘Sharbat Jihad’ Controversy

Baba Ramdev has submitted an undertaking before the Delhi High Court, pledging not to make or circulate any further defamatory or communal remarks against rival brands, following his controversial “Sharbat Jihad” comment that targeted Hamdard’s Rooh Afza. The court had earlier directed both Ramdev and Patanjali Foods Ltd to confirm in writing that they would refrain from any future statements containing communal slurs or derogatory messaging against competitors. Ramdev’s legal team submitted the affidavit on Friday, requesting that the lawsuit be disposed of while assuring full compliance with court directions.

The case was initiated by the Hamdard National Foundation India after Ramdev’s video promoting Patanjali’s rose sharbat went viral, in which he claimed that purchasing Rooh Afza would contribute to building mosques and madrasas, while supporting Patanjali’s product would help grow gurukuls, Patanjali University, and Indian education systems. The court reacted strongly to these comments, with Justice Amit Bansal stating the content “shocked the conscience of the court.” After a warning of a possible contempt order, Patanjali and Ramdev assured the court they would remove the controversial advertisements.

Despite these assurances, the court was informed that the controversial video was merely made private on YouTube rather than being fully removed, and that another objectionable video had surfaced. Taking serious note, the court threatened contempt proceedings if such actions continued. Ramdev’s counsel responded by promising to delete all objectionable content within 24 hours. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on May 9, with the court making it clear that any further violations would not be tolerated.
