A Pune-based law student, Sharmishta Panoli, was arrested by the Kolkata police from Gurugram on May 30 for a derogatory post on Prophet Muhammad. The post, which sparked outrage among the Muslim community, contained disparaging words about the religion and Prophet Muhammad. A complaint was filed at a police station in Kolkata, leading to the registration of an FIR against Panoli.

Panoli, who studies law at Symbiosis College, made the derogatory remarks on her X account on May 14. Her post has since been deleted, but not before it went viral and sparked widespread condemnation. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan demanded immediate action against her, saying that no Muslim would tolerate abusive words about their Prophet.

Panoli was booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samithi (BNS) and has been arrested by the police. She had issued an unconditional apology after the controversy erupted, stating that she never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings. The incident has sparked a strong reaction, with many demanding strict action against those who insult religious sentiments.
