A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Prime Minister Narendra Modi from offering a ceremonial chadar at the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti during the 814th annual Urs at Ajmer Sharif Dargah. As per reports, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is scheduled to offer the chadar on behalf of the Prime Minister.
The matter was mentioned for urgent listing before a vacation bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi. During the brief hearing, counsel for the petitioner sought a stay on the chadar offering, arguing that a related plea concerning the Sankat Mochan Mandir was already pending. However, the Chief Justice declined to grant urgent listing, stating that the matter would not be taken up on the same day.
Offering a ceremonial chadar at Ajmer Sharif during the Urs is a long-standing tradition followed by successive Prime Ministers. Earlier this year, a similar plea was filed before an Ajmer court by Hindu Sena leader Vishnu Gupta as part of an ongoing suit claiming that the dargah was built over the site of a demolished Shiva temple. The petitioner had argued that the Centre sending a chadar to what he termed a “disputed structure” could undermine judicial proceedings. Despite such objections, the practice has historically continued as a symbolic gesture of respect during the Urs.
