A tragic aircraft crash in Kenya’s coastal Malindi County on Friday claimed the lives of three individuals on the ground. The victims included a motorcycle taxi driver and two others struck by debris from the crashing plane, which burst into flames upon impact near the Malindi-Mombasa highway. The pilot and two student passengers onboard managed to jump out of the aircraft before the crash and are now undergoing treatment for injuries. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The crash occurred in the Kwachocha area, which borders Malindi Airport, where residents are currently contesting government plans to expand the airport before resolving land compensation disputes. Sub-County Police Commander LuckyJoski Mudavadi confirmed the fatalities and noted that the plane’s separated wings and tail caused additional damage and casualties during the crash. This incident has intensified calls for improved safety measures around the airport.
Local legislator Rashid Odhiambo stressed the need for stricter enforcement of safety precautions around Malindi Airport to prevent further tragedies. He urged airport management to extend their focus on safety beyond the airport’s boundaries, emphasizing the risk to neighboring communities. The crash serves as a stark reminder of the importance of comprehensive safety protocols in aviation and urban planning.
