Parliament Deadlock Deepens: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Uproar Over Operation Sindoor and Bihar SIR

For the third consecutive day, Parliament’s Monsoon Session was stalled by persistent opposition protests, forcing the adjournment of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha till 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Opposition members, primarily from the INDIA bloc, disrupted proceedings demanding immediate debates on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and the recent cross-border military action dubbed Operation Sindoor. The protests, marked by sloganeering and the display of placards inside both chambers, were condemned by presiding officers, who expressed concern over the deterioration of parliamentary decorum and the repeated hindrance of legislative business.

In the Rajya Sabha, tensions escalated after Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected all 25 adjournment notices submitted under Rule 267. These included issues such as the SIR exercise, alleged discrimination against migrant workers, slum demolitions in Delhi, and aviation safety. Despite multiple appeals from the Chair to maintain order and proceed with Zero Hour, opposition MPs persisted with protests, resulting in adjournments first at 11:10 a.m. and then again until 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha witnessed similar scenes, with Speaker Om Birla warning that the conduct of MPs—whom he accused of engaging in “street-like behaviour”—was unbecoming of elected representatives.

In response to growing pressure from the opposition, Parliament has now scheduled a structured debate on Operation Sindoor on July 29, with 16 hours allocated in the Lok Sabha and 9 in the Rajya Sabha. The discussion is expected to focus on the military operation that took place from May 7 to May 10 following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in April. However, opposition leaders remain firm in their demand for a statement from the Prime Minister, particularly on the alleged political motives behind the Bihar SIR, which they argue could lead to voter suppression. As parliamentary business continues to be derailed, the deadlock threatens to overshadow the remainder of the Monsoon Session.
