The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to criminalise insults to the national song Vande Mataram. The legislation was cleared by a voice vote after a brief discussion in the House. The Bill had earlier received approval from the Rajya Sabha and now moves ahead in the legislative process.

Parliament proceedings remained disrupted throughout the day due to continuous protests by Opposition members over various issues. Soon after the House assembled at 11 am, slogan-shouting by Opposition MPs forced Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the proceedings until 2 pm. Following the resumption, the House witnessed further disruptions and was adjourned twice more, including after it reconvened at 3 pm, as Opposition members continued their protests despite repeated appeals from the Chair to maintain order.

When the House resumed later in the afternoon, the government proceeded with legislative business amid the disruptions. After a short debate, the Lok Sabha passed the amendment bill by voice vote before adjourning for the day. The passage of the legislation comes amid a politically charged Monsoon Session, with repeated interruptions affecting the functioning of both Houses of Parliament.
