BRS president and former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday confirmed that Maganti Sunitha, wife of late MLA Maganti Gopinath, will contest the upcoming Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election on behalf of the party. The announcement was framed as a tribute to Gopinath’s legacy, with party leaders emphasizing his popularity and long-standing service to both the constituency and the BRS. According to the party, the decision reflects the aspirations of Jubilee Hills residents who admired Gopinath’s commitment and leadership, and now wish to see his family continue that political journey.
Party leaders stated that Sunitha would carry forward her husband’s unfinished work and strengthen the BRS’s presence in Jubilee Hills. They highlighted that Gopinath was remembered as a selfless leader who earned respect for his dedication to both the party and the people. By fielding his wife, the BRS aims to maintain continuity while respecting the sentiments of local voters, ensuring that the by-election campaign will build on the goodwill and legacy Gopinath left behind.
Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is yet to declare its candidate, though speculation is mounting that former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin may be considered. Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar earlier stressed that the Congress would select a local candidate with proven public support, ruling out any “outsider” option. As political parties prepare for the by-election, attention now turns to whether AIMIM, which supported BRS in 2023, will extend its backing again or shift its stance this time.
