Mumbai Police have registered an abetment of suicide case in connection with the death of an IIT Bombay student after a complaint was filed by the victim’s father. The second-year student, Sahil Wakode from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was reportedly caught using a mobile phone during an examination to upload question paper content to ChatGPT for answers. Police said the case has been registered against the individuals named in the father’s complaint, and an investigation is currently underway.

According to IIT Bombay, no disciplinary action had been initiated against the student. The institute stated that the matter was discussed with him by the course instructor and the Head of the Department, who counselled him and assured him that the incident would not negatively affect his academic future. Later that evening, the student was found dead in his hostel room. His family has alleged that he was subjected to harassment and has demanded justice.

The incident has triggered protests on the IIT Bombay campus, with several students questioning the institute’s handling of the case. Some protesters claimed the student had been warned of a possible one-year suspension and feared losing hostel accommodation, though IIT Bombay has denied taking disciplinary action and these claims have not been independently verified. The institute said it is deeply saddened by the student’s death and that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the appropriate authorities.
