The child sexual abuse case involving Gem Granites owner R. Veeramani has taken a new turn after fresh claims that Chennai Police were informed about the allegations nearly a year before the case was officially registered. Ranjan Kumar, President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee’s Scheduled Caste Department, claimed he submitted a written complaint to the then Additional Commissioner of Police, N. Kannan, in November 2024, alleging that Veeramani had sexually abused minor girls. Ranjan also shared screenshots of messages and claimed he later met police officers, who sought additional information and video clips related to the allegations.
According to Ranjan Kumar, the complaint specifically named Veeramani and alleged that minor girls from socially and economically disadvantaged communities had been sexually abused. He claimed he had recorded visuals shown to him by Shanthi, a close associate of Veeramani, and later handed the information to the police. While former Additional Commissioner N. Kannan initially said he could not immediately recall the complaint, he later confirmed that Ranjan had approached him and stated that he treated the matter as sensitive and informed the then Chennai Police Commissioner. However, Ranjan alleged that despite repeated interactions with police officials, no meaningful action was taken on his complaint at the time.
The case officially came to light in October 2025, when a child rights activist submitted a pen drive containing alleged video evidence to the police, leading to the registration of an FIR. After an initial closure report was rejected by the Special POCSO Court, the investigation was reopened, resulting in the recovery of alleged original digital evidence and the arrest of R. Veeramani, Shanthi, and Mahendra Simhan in August 2026. Police have accused the three of involvement in the alleged offences and destruction of evidence. The latest revelations have now raised fresh questions over whether authorities had prior knowledge of the allegations in 2024 and whether timely action could have altered the course of the investigation.
