Even as Cyclone Arnab has weakened into a depression over central India, a fresh weather system has emerged over the south Andaman Sea, raising concerns of another spell of severe weather for Andhra Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the newly formed low-pressure area is expected to intensify into a depression around October 31 before moving west-northwest towards the Andhra coast in the following days. Meanwhile, the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab continues to affect several states, with heavy rainfall spreading across West Bengal, Jharkhand and parts of Madhya Pradesh. Authorities remain on high alert as rescue, relief and restoration operations continue in the cyclone-hit regions.
The cyclone caused widespread destruction across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, leaving villages submerged, rivers overflowing and transport services badly disrupted. Around 300 villages in Odisha’s Ganjam district remain cut off by floodwaters, while nearly 2,000 people are stranded in low-lying areas awaiting rescue. Indian Coast Guard helicopters, NDRF teams and state disaster response forces have been deployed to evacuate residents and restore connectivity. In Andhra Pradesh, Srikakulam district recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving nearly 250 mm within 24 hours. Flooded railway bridges forced the cancellation and diversion of several trains on the Howrah–Chennai route, while extensive damage was reported to crops, roads, power infrastructure and public utilities.
Relief efforts have intensified as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu conducted an aerial survey of the affected districts to assess damage to agriculture and infrastructure. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured full support to the affected states, while state governments continue to restore electricity, drinking water and road connectivity. Although Arnab is expected to weaken further into a low-pressure system, meteorologists have warned that the newly developing Bay of Bengal weather system could once again bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Andhra coast. Officials have urged residents to closely follow weather advisories and remain prepared as authorities monitor the evolving situation over the coming days.
