Flood Alert in Hyderabad as Himayat Sagar, Osman Sagar Gates Opened; 55 Evacuated

Authorities in Hyderabad issued a flood warning on Friday, September 26, after the gates of both Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs were lifted following heavy rainfall across Telangana. At Osman Sagar, water levels rose to just half a foot below the full tank level, prompting officials to open 10 gates up to six feet, releasing 6,370 cusecs of water against an inflow of 5,500 cusecs. Meanwhile, Himayat Sagar recorded levels of 1763 feet, nearly touching its full capacity, leading to the release of 4,069 cusecs through four gates. The combined outflow from the twin reservoirs stood at approximately 12,000 cusecs.

As a precautionary measure, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) evacuated 55 people from flood-prone areas under Shivaji Bridge and near the Bhoo Laxmi Temple. Those displaced, mostly daily wage workers and their families, were relocated to Gode-ki-khabar GHMC Community Hall, where they are being provided food, shelter, and medical aid. Officials said the swift evacuation was necessary to prevent any casualties, given the rising water discharge from the reservoirs into the Musi River. Residents of localities such as Attapur, Rajendranagar, Karwan, Bahadurpura, Chaderghat, and Malakpet have also been asked to stay alert for further instructions.

Adding to the concerns, the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Hyderabad, forecasting 50–85 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Persistent downpours have also pushed Hussain Sagar’s water level above its Full Tank Level of 513.41 metres, now standing at 513.45 metres and inching close to the Maximum Water Level of 514.75 metres. With inflows of 680 cusecs and outflows of 895 cusecs recorded, authorities have urged citizens to avoid waterlogged areas, report open manholes through the MyGHMC app, and exercise caution until weather conditions improve.
