The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly refuted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s accusations that voter names are being systematically deleted ahead of the upcoming elections. Gandhi had alleged that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was shielding “vote chors,” a remark that quickly sparked political debate across the country. Responding to these claims, the poll body called the allegations “incorrect” and “baseless,” stating that its processes ensure fairness and transparency in maintaining electoral rolls.
In its official clarification, the Commission emphasized that voter deletions cannot happen arbitrarily or through online interference. The poll body pointed out that every case of deletion undergoes due process, including providing the affected voter with an opportunity to present their side before any final action is taken. This, according to the ECI, safeguards citizens from wrongful removal of their names and preserves the integrity of India’s democratic system.
The Commission also acknowledged that while there were some unsuccessful attempts to tamper with voter rolls in Karnataka’s Aland Assembly Constituency, it had already filed an FIR to investigate the matter. Stressing that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, the ECI reassured citizens that it remains committed to protecting electoral rights and maintaining public trust. Meanwhile, Gandhi’s remarks have added fuel to the political narrative, keeping electoral integrity at the center of national debate.
