New Delhi: Ahead of the proposed October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police have appealed to local residents and traders to avoid participating in the gathering, citing concerns over maintaining law and order. According to reports, police officials have been holding meetings with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, and PG owners from October 7 to 10, requesting their cooperation in preventing large crowds from assembling. Shopkeepers have also been advised to close their establishments earlier than usual to reduce congestion and ensure public safety in the area.
The police’s appeal has sparked mixed reactions among local residents and civil society members. While authorities stressed the importance of preventing any situation that could disrupt public order, several attendees at the meetings argued that peaceful protest is a fundamental constitutional right. Some residents expressed concern over previous police actions during earlier demonstrations and urged officials to ensure that law enforcement acts with restraint while managing the situation. Community representatives said they were willing to cooperate in maintaining peace but expected fair and respectful treatment from the authorities.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), along with supporting student and youth organisations, has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with the protest. Party leaders stated that the demonstration would remain peaceful and described the right to protest as a constitutionally protected freedom. A CJP spokesperson criticised the police’s public appeal, arguing that citizens have the right to decide whether to participate in peaceful demonstrations. Security arrangements across the Jantar Mantar area have been strengthened, with additional police personnel expected to remain deployed as authorities prepare for the planned gathering.
