Dalit Student Attacked in Tamil Nadu: Fingers Severed Over Kabaddi Match Victory

A shocking case of caste-based violence has emerged in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, where a Dalit student was brutally attacked by members of the Thevar community. The victim, Devendran, a Class 11 student, was on his way to school in Palayamkottai when three men intercepted his bus, dragged him out, and severed fingers from his left hand. His father, Thanga Ganesh, who tried to protect him, was also severely injured, sustaining deep wounds to his head. The assailants fled when bystanders intervened, leaving both father and son gravely wounded. Devendran was initially taken to Srivaikundam Government Hospital and later shifted to Tirunelveli Government Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to reattach his severed fingers.

The incident is believed to be linked to a recent Kabaddi match in which Devendran played a crucial role in securing victory for his team. His family claims that members of the dominant Thevar caste, angered by his success, planned the attack as an act of caste-based retaliation. “This was not just an act of violence; it was a message to ensure that Dalits do not rise above their assigned social status,” said his father. The police have detained three minors in connection with the crime, but the victim’s family is demanding the immediate arrest of all those responsible, alleging that the attackers were backed by influential forces in the community.

The brutal attack has sparked outrage, with activists and local leaders condemning the caste-based violence. Devendran’s uncle, Suresh, questioned the systemic discrimination Dalits continue to face despite legal protections. “Why do they hate us for trying to succeed? He was studying well and had a bright future ahead. Someone powerful is encouraging these acts of violence against Dalits,” he said. The case has once again highlighted the deep-rooted caste divisions in Tamil Nadu, raising concerns about the safety and rights of marginalized communities. Human rights organizations are urging the authorities to take swift action and ensure justice for Devendran and his family.
