Crocodile Spotted in Himayat Sagar Canal, Safely Shifted to Hyderabad Zoo

A surprising wildlife encounter occurred in Hyderabad when a crocodile was found in the Kotwalguda-Himayat Sagar canal. Local residents, startled by the presence of the reptile, immediately informed the forest officials. A rescue team arrived at the scene, successfully captured the crocodile, and relocated it to the Nehru Zoological Park, popularly known as the zoo park. Authorities suspect the animal may have entered the canal from a nearby water source, likely due to heavy rains swelling the reservoirs and connected water bodies.

This isn’t the first time the city has seen such incidents. In recent years, Hyderabad has witnessed multiple crocodile sightings, especially near the Musi River. In 2023, a crocodile was spotted near the Salar Jung Museum, while in 2022, another was seen basking on a boulder in the Attapur region. Even in 2020, locals in Puranapul reported a crocodile on the riverbed. These sightings have raised concerns about wildlife movement into urban spaces, especially during the monsoon season.

The latest crocodile has now found a safe home at the zoo park, where it will be kept under observation and cared for by experts. Wildlife officials continue to monitor water bodies around Hyderabad for any further animal movements, especially with IMD forecasting heavy rainfall for July 21 and 22. Citizens are advised to stay alert and report any unusual wildlife sightings to the concerned authorities for swift action.
