Patna witnessed high political drama on Friday when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers clashed with Congress members during a protest march. The ruling party workers, angered over the use of abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother during Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga, marched towards the Congress headquarters at Sadaqat Ashram. Senior BJP leaders, including ministers Nitin Nabin, Sanjay Saraogi, and MLA Sanjiv Chaurasia, led the protest, raising slogans demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi and his party. The BJP leaders declared that the insult would not be tolerated and called it an affront to the dignity of the Prime Minister.
As the march approached Sadaqat Ashram, tension escalated when Congress workers locked the gates of the premises and began pelting stones at the BJP cadres. In retaliation, BJP workers used their flags as weapons, vandalised parked vehicles, and beat photographs of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with sticks. The situation quickly spiraled into chaos, forcing heavy police deployment in the area. Stones, sticks, and party flags turned the political rally into a street confrontation, drawing the attention of the public and sparking fear of a larger law-and-order situation in the city.
Police personnel intervened promptly, bringing the situation under control after persuading BJP workers to retreat. Superintendent of Police (Central) Diksha confirmed that both sides reported injuries and that an investigation would be carried out based on complaints received. Meanwhile, Congress workers staged a sit-in outside the gates of Sadaqat Ashram, accusing BJP members of indulging in “hooliganism” and trying to intimidate their party workers. With Bihar’s political atmosphere already charged, the incident has further deepened the rivalry between the BJP and the Congress, setting the stage for more confrontations ahead.
