The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura, citing the upcoming Village Committee elections scheduled for September 28. A BJP delegation led by Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee submitted a formal request to state election authorities, arguing that Booth Level Officers (BLOs), Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and other election personnel will be fully engaged in conducting the local body polls. The party believes that carrying out both exercises simultaneously could place unnecessary pressure on election officials and affect the smooth conduct of the electoral process.

According to Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Panday, the Special Intensive Revision is scheduled to begin on September 5 and conclude with the publication of the final electoral rolls on December 23, while the draft rolls will be released on October 21. During the revision, Booth Level Officers will conduct house-to-house visits between September 15 and October 14 to distribute and collect pre-filled Enumeration Forms, making up to three visits to every household. The qualifying date for the revision has been fixed as October 1, and the Election Commission has already completed training programmes for officials to ensure an accurate and error-free voter verification process.

The September 28 elections will cover 4,597 seats across 2,634 constituencies in 587 Village Committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), marking the first such polls in nearly a decade. The TTAADC administers almost two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area and serves a population of over 12 lakh people, the majority of whom belong to indigenous tribal communities. While the BJP has requested that the voter roll revision be deferred until after the elections, the Election Commission is yet to announce whether it will accept the proposal or continue with the revision as originally scheduled.
