Bhongir Fort Set for Major Tourism Upgrade with Ropeway and Heritage Revival

The Telangana government is fast-tracking a major tourism development project at Bhongir Fort, aiming to transform the historic landmark into a world-class destination by October 2. Being developed under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme at a cost of Rs 56.81 crore, the project includes a modern ropeway, heritage conservation works, and several new visitor facilities. During an inspection on Monday, Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of work and instructed officials to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated deadline.

The highlight of the project is a 1,020-metre ropeway connecting the base of the fort to its hilltop, significantly improving accessibility for tourists. Built at a cost of Rs 17.91 crore, the ropeway will feature six passenger cabins and one standby cabin, with each cabin accommodating six people. Designed to handle between 250 and 300 visitors every hour, the system will operate at a maximum speed of six metres per second, allowing tourists to enjoy a quicker and more convenient journey while offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Apart from the ropeway, the project includes extensive infrastructure and heritage restoration measures aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience. New parking facilities, improved approach roads, 20 electric vehicles for internal transport, a cafeteria, food kiosks, a viewing gallery, and an interpretation centre are being developed. Restoration of historic structures, beautification of water bodies, construction of pathways, repair of old steps, and decorative lighting are also part of the plan. Additional amenities such as CCTV surveillance, public address systems, toilets, and seating areas will further improve comfort and safety. Located around 50 kilometres from Hyderabad, Bhongir Fort is one of Telangana’s most popular heritage attractions, and officials expect the upgraded facilities to attract significantly higher tourist footfall after completion.
