In a historic and landmark moment, the Indian national flag was hoisted atop Seattle’s world-famous Space Needle on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day celebrations. This was the first time ever that the tricolour flew on the iconic structure, which was originally built in 1962 for the World Fair and has since become a defining symbol of Seattle’s skyline. The event not only marked India’s growing global presence but also highlighted the strong ties between the Indian diaspora and the United States, especially in the Pacific Northwest region.
The hoisting ceremony was attended by the Consul General of India in Seattle, along with Bruce Harrell, the Mayor of Seattle, and several city dignitaries. Together, they witnessed this rare and proud moment that underscored India’s democratic spirit and its global influence. During the event, Seattle leadership acknowledged the immense contributions of the Indian American community in shaping Seattle’s progress, particularly in transforming the city into one of the most dynamic tech hubs of the United States. To mark the occasion, the Consulate General of India in Seattle also hosted a grand community reception at Kerry Park, a scenic location that overlooks the Seattle skyline. With India’s tricolour fluttering proudly atop the Space Needle in the background, the event became an emotional celebration for hundreds of Indian Americans who gathered to witness history.
