Over 20 Injured as Bus Overturns on Slippery Canal Road in Odisha

A major road accident occurred in Odisha on Friday, August 8, when a passenger bus traveling from Parjang in Dhenkanal district to Bhubaneswar overturned near Kantiokteni under Tumusingha police station limits. The bus, carrying over 50 passengers, reportedly lost control and flipped over on a narrow canal-side road made slippery by recent rainfall. Eyewitnesses claim the driver chose an unfamiliar and treacherous route instead of the usual highway, resulting in the tragic mishap that left more than 20 passengers injured. Locals have alleged that despite repeated requests from passengers to avoid the muddy road, the driver proceeded, leading to the bus skidding off balance and toppling.

According to initial reports, the driver’s unfamiliarity with the route and poor visibility due to muddy conditions were primary contributors to the accident. Several injured passengers, speaking from the hospital, criticized the driver’s negligence and the lack of proper warning signs along the canal road. “We kept telling him to take the regular route, but he ignored us,” said one of the victims. The accident has sparked fresh concerns about road safety in rural areas of Odisha, where monsoon conditions frequently make roads treacherous, and alternate routes are often unfit for large vehicles.

Emergency rescue operations were swiftly initiated by local authorities. Personnel from the fire services, police, and villagers collaborated to rescue trapped passengers and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Medical teams provided immediate care, while authorities confirmed that most of the injuries were non-fatal. The state government is expected to launch an investigation into the incident, with focus on the driver’s conduct, road conditions, and availability of alternate safe routes. Officials have reiterated the need for better signage and driver training to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
