Saudi Kaaba Volunteer Fatally Stabbed in Cambridge, Two Arrested in Ongoing Probe

Mohammed Yousef Alqassem, a 20-year-old Saudi student known for his service as a Kaaba volunteer, was tragically stabbed to death near Cambridge railway station in the United Kingdom. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Friday, August 1, as Alqassem was walking back to his accommodation while on a 10-week English course at EF International Language School. Despite swift efforts by paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene just after midnight. The unprovoked attack has sent shockwaves through both the local and international community.

Cambridgeshire Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing — a 21-year-old man on suspicion of murder and a 50-year-old man from Cambridge on suspicion of involvement. Both are currently in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station as investigations continue. While no motive has yet been identified, the attack is being treated as a random and senseless act of violence. The Saudi Embassy in the UK has confirmed its coordination with British authorities and is facilitating the repatriation of Alqassem’s body to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Alqassem’s family, heartbroken by the loss, described him as a vibrant, noble, and compassionate young man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. “He was a source of light within the family,” they said in a statement. EF International Language Campuses acknowledged the tragedy and assured they are offering counseling and support to students and staff affected by the incident. They described the act as “isolated” and reiterated their commitment to student safety in the wake of the heartbreaking event.
