After a brief monsoon pause, Hyderabad witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, August 4, bringing much-needed respite from the heat. The downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, caused waterlogging in several areas across the city. Weather observer T Balaji estimated that Hyderabad could receive up to 50 mm of rainfall in the coming hours. The sudden change in weather also disrupted normal life in certain localities, with clogged drains and slowed traffic movement adding to the commuter woes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a yellow alert for the city and surrounding suburbs until August 9. It warned of thunderstorms with lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph at isolated locations. The heaviest spells are forecasted for August 8 and 9, with neighboring districts like Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri expected to receive intense rainfall, potentially impacting Hyderabad’s weather further. The IMD also highlighted the possibility of tree falls, damage to power lines, and disruption of urban transport systems.
Municipal and electricity departments have been placed on alert to handle emergencies, particularly in low-lying and high-traffic zones. Citizens have been advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and exercise caution near power poles and waterlogged roads. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is expected to deploy emergency teams to tackle drainage and traffic congestion as the rains continue through the week.
