Heavy and continuous rainfall in Mumbai has triggered a landslide in the Bhandup (West) area, leading to the collapse of portions of two houses in Khindipada on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred near Sai Niketan CHS, opposite Omega School, around 7:30 PM, when mud and soil slid down from a nearby hill. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the houses were already vacated, and three to four more nearby homes were also evacuated as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and emergency services including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, S Ward officials, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) swiftly responded to the site.
The city has been battling relentless downpours, recording over 100 mm of rainfall within 48 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This led to the issuance of an orange alert for Mumbai and adjoining areas. Rainfall was especially intense in Colaba and Santacruz, which registered 87 mm and 85 mm respectively. Waterlogging has caused significant disruptions, forcing the temporary closure of the Andheri subway and resulting in traffic diversions. Minor incidents such as tree falls and electrical short circuits have been reported across the city, but there have been no major casualties.
With the IMD forecasting more heavy rain and gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h through July 24, the BMC has urged residents to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone zones. Control rooms across all wards have been placed on high alert, and dewatering pumps have been deployed in flood-prone regions to manage waterlogging. The Mumbai Traffic Police and civic authorities continue to coordinate efforts to monitor affected zones and ensure the safety of residents as the monsoon shows no signs of easing.
