Farmers from several villages in Kulcharam mandal staged a ‘rasta roko’ on the Sangareddy–Medak road at Rangampet village on Wednesday, protesting the government’s delay in paddy procurement. With the Indian Meteorological Department predicting more rain in the coming days, farmers from Rangampet, Pythara, Konapur, Tukkapur, Vaimanthapur, and nearby villages took to the streets, demanding urgent action. They said that despite transporting their harvests to procurement centres, truckloads of paddy were still lying there, exposed to rain and damage.
The situation turned emotional when one farmer brought sprouted, rain-damaged paddy to the protest site and collapsed on the road, weeping uncontrollably. His act highlighted the mounting stress among cultivators who have struggled to protect their produce in the face of daily rainfall. The protest caused a significant traffic jam, with vehicles stuck on both sides of the road as tensions flared.
Officials from the police and agriculture departments arrived at the spot to pacify the farmers and promised prompt action. Only after receiving an assurance from the authorities did the protesting farmers agree to clear the road and return to the procurement centres. However, they warned of further protests if the government fails to act swiftly to prevent more crop losses.
