After nearly five years of investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially filed a closure report in the death case of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, concluding that it was a case of suicide with no evidence of foul play. The report was submitted to the Bandra magistrate court on March 22, absolving all individuals previously named in the FIRs, including actor Rhea Chakraborty, her family members, Rajput’s sister Priyanka, and a doctor accused in a counter-FIR. The CBI’s findings reaffirm the original Mumbai Police report, which had ruled Rajput’s death as an accidental suicide on June 14, 2020. The case, however, had taken a national turn, leading to multiple high-profile investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), further complicating the legal proceedings over the years.
The case initially gained widespread attention when Rajput’s father, K.K. Singh, filed an FIR in Patna, alleging that Rhea Chakraborty and her family had abetted his son’s suicide and misappropriated his finances. As a result, the CBI took over the investigation on August 6, 2020. Despite extensive inquiries, forensic analyses, and questioning of several individuals, the agency found no prosecutable evidence to support the allegations. The CBI’s closure report states that neither Rhea Chakraborty nor any of the accused had any role in causing Rajput’s death. Alongside this, a counter-FIR filed by Chakraborty against Rajput’s sisters, alleging that they procured unauthorized medication for him, has also been dismissed due to a lack of criminal intent. With this closure report, the CBI has effectively ended its probe, pending final acceptance by the court, which is set to hold a hearing on April 8 to review the findings.
