Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir, a 6.5-kilometer marvel connecting Sonamarg year-round. This strategic infrastructure project, completed at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore, bypasses landslide-prone and avalanche-affected areas, ensuring smooth connectivity between Srinagar, Sonamarg, and the Leh region. Constructed at an altitude of over 8,650 feet, the tunnel also features a 7.5-meter-wide emergency passage, enhancing safety for travelers. During the event, PM Modi, accompanied by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, highlighted the tunnel’s importance for trade, tourism, and defense operations.
The project, initiated in May 2015 and operational since February 2024, stands as a testament to India’s engineering excellence. The Z-Morh tunnel is equipped with advanced technologies, ensuring real-time traffic updates and seamless connectivity. Officials emphasized that this development will significantly boost the region’s economy, unlocking new opportunities for local businesses and tourism. Prime Minister Modi personally met with the construction workers to acknowledge their dedication despite challenging conditions, marking the visit as a celebration of teamwork and perseverance.
This tunnel, along with the ongoing Zojila project, will transform travel across the region, providing uninterrupted access to Baltal and Ladakh for both civilians and the military. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which oversaw the project, hailed it as a breakthrough for Jammu and Kashmir. By bridging key locations, the Z-Morh tunnel not only resolves logistical hurdles but also sets a benchmark for future regional infrastructure projects.
