Mumbai BEST Bus Crash Claims Seven Lives; Over 40 Injured

The tragic BEST bus accident in Mumbai’s Kurla has left the city in shock, with the death toll now rising to seven. The incident occurred on Monday night when the bus, reportedly losing control, plowed through pedestrians and vehicles on SG Barve Marg, eventually halting inside a residential colony. Officials confirmed that 49 people sustained injuries, many of whom are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences, announcing ₹5 lakh compensation for the deceased’s families and full medical coverage for the injured.

Initial investigations suggest the bus, an electric vehicle leased by BEST from Hyderabad-based Olectra Greentech, may have suffered a mechanical failure. Experts are inspecting the vehicle to determine if a technical glitch caused the driver to lose control. The driver, now in police custody, is being tested for any signs of intoxication. Meanwhile, SG Barve Marg remains closed for traffic, and alternative routes have been established for commuters.

This devastating incident has raised concerns over road safety and the reliability of leased electric buses. While authorities promise prompt action and assistance for the victims, the incident underscores the need for stricter safety measures in public transport systems. As investigations continue, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the potential hazards posed by urban road mishaps.
